IGC Camp!!!

IGC 2011 was a huge success! A hundred Thanks to all who had taken their time off to help us! Including the participants, sponsors, SAs and, most important of all, the main comm for putting in their utmost effort to make this possible!

It has been an eventful and exciting 5 days for me. This is my first time taking part in running a 5 days 4 nights camp as an events manager in IGC. One of the challenges I faced was to integrate volunteerism and passion already within the campers, with the awareness talks by each portfolio so that campers are ready to choose their desired portfolio by the end of the camp.

Day 1 kicked off with a bang as the participants wore their individual group colours, adding vibrancy to the camp! To allow them to get to know each other better, mass games were played. In one of the games, participants were each given an animal name. They will then find their animal friends by making the animal sounds. They were all blindfolded, simulating a visual disability so that they could better understand the problems faced by the visually handicapped. The campers were then made to go through obstacles within their animal families.

After the games, participants are taught the IGC mass dance, so that they will be able to dance with their SP on the last day.

Day 2 was a fun filled but tiring day. In the morning, there were station games around NTU. Each station had an objective to introduce the different portfolios of WSC through the station games. In one of the games, participants were asked to have their hands tied to each other to stimulate a physical disability. They were given the task to protect an egg so that it does not crack when let to fall off a building at level 1. It was difficult for the campers as not all of them were able to move at the same time. I believe it was an enriching experience for all of us.

In the afternoon, there was Amazing race. Teams were given clues to various stations around town. At each station, teams were to complete a task that trains their observation and quick thinking skills. The fastest groups to complete the race emerges victorious for the Amazing race!

When the race was over, the campers ended up at Sembawang girls'/boys' brigade campsite, which was our 'home' for the next 3 days! All tired out and sleepy, the campers marched off for a bath and finally to their bunks to have a good night's sleep.

Day 3 was the most meaningful day. The campers went to AWWA, an elderly home for their activities for the day. They were given the chance to interact with the elderly and entertain them. On this day, we were truly able to do something for the beneficiary of the less fortunate. Firstly, there was cleaning of the elderly's rooms, so that they could have a better living condition. After cleaning the rooms, the campers stayed and talked to the elderly. Most of the elderly enjoyed our visit, as companionship is what they missed badly.

Later in the afternoon, the campers were scheduled to perform for the entertainment of the elderly. There were a total of 6 fascinating performances that pleased the elderly until evening time. By dusk, the campers had to leave AWWA to carry on with the activities for the night.

IT was SP night. The campers were all blindfolded and given a partner of the opposite sex to talk to. They were given the chance to talk and get to know more about each other for 20minutes before they had to settle for the night. The identities of the partners were kept secret, having the campers baffled by the amazing experience they just had with a secret person.

The visually handicapped and the intellectually disabled came down to our campsite for a visit on the fourth day. We played station games with them, taking care of their needs as we moved from one station to another. There was a station that taught us origami. We were amazed by the intellectually disabled as they fold paper boats and aeroplanes that were considered complicated to us, and which most of us did not even know how to fold.

In the evening time, there was inter-OG games. The different OGs were to compete against each other in tele-matches. That was the first day we got to play inter-OG games. That was a fun-filled experience.

Night time was SP initiation. The Sp pairs were united again. This time, other than talking, the pairs had to go through obstacles together blind-folded!

After two nights of interaction, our participants will finally get to find out who their SP really is! The SP revelation is held on our finale day of the camp, where the male campers will be tasked to put on their very best to prove their sincerity to their SP!

After all their partners have been revealed, the pairs will get to dance together with the dance steps they learned on the very first day. Up next,  the pairs proceed will have their brunch outside the camp, where they will be able to enjoy the serenity and tranquility of Sembawang Park.

5 days has been a quick one for us. With the blink of an eye, the camp is coming to an end. Though we had to say goodbye to each other, the friendship and bond that we foster is worthwhile, and the spirit of volunteerism has been ignited in each and every of our hearts. We were glad to say IGC 2011 was a huge success and we would once again thank everyone for their support they have gave us. Ignite Change OH YEAH!!!

IGC FAQ

Hi, firstly I wanna say thank you to all the interested participants who have visit this page, those who have signed up for the camp and those who are still thinking about it.

We have been receiving a handful of questions from some of you, thus we have come out with an FAQ to answer some of the popular questions mentioned.

Regarding NTU's WSC
There are links in the site for you to navigate to WSC main site but I will give you a detailed description here to answer many questions about WSC.

 1. About WSC
WSC is actually one of the four biggest clubs in NTU which is known as the big 4 CCA. The other 3 clubs are Sports Club, Cultural Activities Club and Student Union. There are 3 different types of committees in WSC which are, Regular Service Projects (RSP), Special Projects and Supporting Commitees.

RSPs provide opportunities to students who are keen to do volunteer work and serve the less fortunate. They will have weekly session to volunteer their service to the beneficiaries at various services centres. There are 6 RSPs in WSC and they are group according to the beneficiaries they are working with.
-RSP Elders
-RSP Friends of Children
-RSP Hearing Impaired
-RSP Intellectually Disabled
-RSP Visually Handicapped
-RSP Youth

Special Projects are event organiser which are not limited to a certain scope because the 6 SP available are unique in their own ways. There are both local and overseas projects available and each of them is targeted at different masses.
-Ignite Change( IGC)
-Camp Outreach (COR)
-Challenge Your Limits (CurL)
-Overseas Volunteering Expedition (OVE)
-Patchworks
-Volunteer Management (VM)

Supporting Committee are responsible for the club's image through promotion of the club, providing coverage for events, website management, newsletter production, liaison with external welfare organizations, finance, archiving of club's achievements.
-Finance Committee
-Publicity and Publications (PnP)
-Public Relations (PR)
-Growth & Development Unit (GDU)

That’s it! Basically WSC is like a club which has 16 different CCAs (each committee = 1 CCA). Of course there is an Executive Management Committee which oversees the work of all these 16 committees. In NTU, it is possible to join multiple committees or multiple CCAs (does not need to restrict to WSC only). However you will need to manage your time between studies and your CCA commitment. Thus it is essential to find out your commitment level needed for each different CCA that NTU has to offer.

2. Is it compulsory to join WSC after the camp?
It is not compulsory. This camp is just an opportunity created for the freshmen and non WSC members to get together to meet and interact with people who has the same passion in serving for the society. Thus the main aims of this camp is to let participant enjoy and not recruitment camp.

3. Will I be able to join WSC if I didn’t attend/unable to get into the camp?

Yes you will be still able to join! There is a recruitment drive around August/early September to recruit interested student who are interested to be part of the WSC family. However it will be good to join the camp as you will have the opportunity to interact with the various beneficiaries during the camp itself. Thus it will be a good experience and chance to make friends who are interested in helping the same group of people.

About IGC
We will try to provide you with as much details about the camp as possible so that you will know what to expect and won’t turn up with the wrong expectation (I hope not).
The main aim of IGC every year is to get students who are passionate and have the spirit of volunteerism to come together and enjoy this 5 days of non-stop action and excitement! Our second aim will be introducing the various committees we have in WSC and interaction with the various beneficiaries we are working with. So yes! You will be able to talk/play games/interact with the beneficiaries that will be coming down on certain days of the camp.

4. What is this year’s IGC about?
This year, our camp theme is “Finding N.E.M.O”. Many may wonder what does Finding Nemo has to do with the camp, as stated in both the brochures and the blog. Through this camp, we hope you can find your “New Extraordinary Meaningful Odyssey” (N.E.M.O). It will definitely be a different camp experience from other orientation camps as we ignite the passion of volunteerism in you! We, as the main committee of IGC has found our own NEMO, so have you found yours? Be sure to embark on this wonderful journey with us to discover your very own NEMO!

5. So what will I be doing at the camp?
As mentioned above, we will be playing games, getting to know new friends, interaction with the beneficiaries and understanding what is it like to be a volunteer.

6. I can’t attend the full 5 days, how?
You are still welcome to join the camp, however please note down in the application form and inform your Group leader (GLs) about it. It is strongly encouraged that you can stay for the full 5 days (:

7. When is the camp again? And how much is the camp fee?
Camp will be on the 27th to 31st July. Report time for 27th is around 9 o’clock, your friendly GLs will call you to inform you about the timing. Camp will break on 31st July at around 5.30pm. Camp fee is $60 inclusive of the camp shirt, food and accommodation.
As the camp dates draw nearer, your group leaders will let you know more details pertaining to the camp! So not to worry! :)

I hope this FAQ is useful to all of you. Dont forget to sign up before the deadline. Hope to see you at the camp!
